Before your trip
My country does not appear on the list of UK ETA-eligible countries. What should I do? Toggle faqs
If you’re a passport holder of a certain country and it does not appear on the dropdown list on the application form, you are not eligible for the UK ETA. You can apply for a visit visa through the UK government website.
If you’re travelling to the UK with a visa, do you need an ETA? Toggle faqs
All passengers need either a visa or an ETA to enter the country. The only exceptions are British and Irish citizens. From April 2025, citizens from around 80 countries need to get an ETA before travelling to the UK.
If you’re not eligible for the ETA, you must apply for a visa. Visa holders don’t need an ETA.
Will I be refused entry to the UK if I do not have an approved ETA? Toggle faqs
For citizens of eligible countries, the ETA is required for entry to the UK. Airlines will be responsible for verifying that eligible passengers have the right travel documents before boarding. If you do not obtain an ETA, you may be denied boarding.
When will EU citizens need an ETA to travel to the United Kingdom? Toggle faqs
The UK’s plans to expand the ETA scheme state that it will be a necessary requirement for all visa-exempt travellers by 2025. This excludes British citizens and residents, as well as Irish nationals. Starting 2 April 2025, all European visitors will need ETA approval.
Where in the UK is an ETA required? Toggle faqs
ETA requirements are relevant for land borders, airports, and seaports in the United Kingdom. This comprises England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. You do not need an ETA for the Republic of Ireland, as it’s not part of the United Kingdom.

Do I need to apply for a new ETA each time I go to the UK? Toggle faqs
No, your ETA is a multiple-entry travel permit. It allows you to stay in the UK for up to 6 months at a time and is valid for 2 years. Note that your ETA is linked to your passport. If you change your passport, you’ll need to complete a new ETA application.
Is the UK ETA equivalent to the EVW? Toggle faqs
The formerly used Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) has been replaced by The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It’s no longer possible to get an EVW. You must apply for an ETA instead.
I have a last-minute trip to the UK. Can I get my UK ETA in time? Toggle faqs

Yes, children also need a UK ETA. As a parent or guardian, you can complete the application on behalf of your child. Make sure you complete the form with the minor’s passport details.
